filipino and proud (! or ?)
"You should start thinking about who to vote," my mom reminded me last week. Oh right, I'm a registered voter already! On May 14, 2007 I'm gonna have an inky thumb! I have to start reading up on the candidates because honestly, I have no idea who's running except for the celebrities/politician-wannabes and Manny Pacquiao. What is happening to my country? The elections is becoming a joke.
Here's what I grew up believing: there is a difference between a politician and a public servant. A politician's main concern is getting into power and more power. I think it was Uli who said that the Senate was just 24 people waiting to be president. A public servant puts his people's interest first. No corrupting, no empty promises. Just service. If I were to become an adviser to someone powerful, I'd suggest a few things.
2) Emphasis on education. Public school teachers should get paid more. My English professor has been teaching in UP for 35 years and is getting paid less than 15k a month. That's someone with an MA and Ph.D. under her belt.
3) Focus on the arts. Filipinos are naturally gifted in performing arts. When they had auditions for Disneyland HK, they fired the Japanese and Chinese dancers because they couldn't learn as fast as the Filipinos. They had to hold a second round of auditions here. We were once touted as the "Latinos of Asia" in terms of dance. That's why I'm so angry about the San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra being disbanded because San Miguel chose to focus their funds on the four basketball teams they own. Personally they're investing in a useless cause. High school Italian teams can beat the all-star PBA team, but our musicians are at par with the international standards. There's gotta be more performing arts high schools in the cities. Mt. Makiling, Pampanga, and Baguio are too far.
4) Population control. Contraceptives and sex education should be encouraged. Projects concerning population distribution. Most of our problems are born from this. Too many people = too much waste.
5) The environment of the Philippine shows SO much potential. My dad wrote in his book something like, "When God gave away natural beauty, the Philippines must have been in the front row." We gotta work on it now before it disappears for good.
6) Too many laws already. We don't need any more. What matters more is the implementation of those laws.
I know I'm being idealistic. But I do believe those things can be done. Maybe not next year or the year after that, but it CAN be done. Singapore fixed themselves up in like, 7 years? We can do it too. It's not a matter of money. The Philippines has a lot of money that goes to highways or luxury cars or mistresses. It's a matter of priority.
And just to continue my political thoughts! I don't think the Philippines is ready for democracy. I think it needs to be whipped to shape first. But for the dictatorship structure to work, we need a brilliant leader who will make us understand WHY we need it. And it ain't gonna be Bong Revilla or Lito Lapid or Richard Gomez. Who? I don't know.
By writing this entry I'm sure to get a lot of comments, violent reactions, whatever. Go for it. I respect your thoughts.
